Photographing takeout dishes with a phone

Capture the actual portion clearly before editing a food photograph.

Photograph the dish customers receive

Use the normal serving and the packaging or plate appropriate to the listing. Adding extra toppings for a photograph can create the wrong expectation. Wipe spills from the rim and arrange the real components so they are visible. Keep food handling and hygiene ahead of the photograph.

Choose light before props

Place the dish near a window with soft side light. Turn off nearby lamps if they add an unwanted color cast. A plain background and one clean surface are often enough. Move around the dish to reduce reflections on sauces and packaging instead of hiding them with stronger filters.

Try an angle that explains the food

A sandwich may need a side view to show the filling; a mixed platter may read better from above. Keep the phone steady and check focus on the main ingredient. Leave space around the plate for the crop used by your ordering platform. Save the unedited original.

Review edits against the serving

Compare ingredient count, portion size, garnish and container shape with the original. Reject edits that add food or change the dish. If a customer orders the photographed item, the image should help them recognize what arrives. An attractive scene is useful only when the food remains accurate.
